Unsure what job you want next? Start here.
Jun 03, 2025
Not knowing what’s next can feel frustrating--especially when you’re ready to take action but don’t have a clear direction. If you’re thinking about returning to work and can’t figure out what kind of job you want, you’re not alone.
A lot has changed--not just in the workforce, but in you. And it’s okay if what used to make sense doesn’t anymore.
Let’s take the pressure off. You don’t need a five-year plan to move forward. You just need a place to start.
Step 1: Let Go of the “Perfect” Answer
This isn’t about choosing the one “right” career path forever. It’s about figuring out what matters to you now--what kind of work feels meaningful, doable, and aligned with the life you’re living today.
Try to move away from thinking you need to have it all figured out. Focus instead on learning more about what fits you now.
Step 2: Take Inventory
Before jumping into job boards, take some time to reflect.
Ask yourself:
-
What did I like or dislike about past jobs or experiences?
-
What am I naturally good at or what do people often come to me for help with?
-
What kind of work would feel purposeful or satisfying?
This doesn’t have to be a deep soul search. Just jot down what comes to mind. Often the patterns are there--you just need to slow down enough to see them.
Step 3: Try a Few Things Out
Clarity often comes through doing.
If something sounds interesting, see if you can dip your toe in. That might mean:
-
Volunteering in a related field
-
Taking a short class or workshop
-
Talking to someone who’s in a role you’re curious about
This kind of low-pressure exploration can give you insight without a big commitment.
Step 4: Take the FindMojo Motivators Assessment
Motherhood changes you, and if you're like I was, you may be having a difficult time figuring out who you are. You may need time to rediscover yourself.
The FindMojo Assessment is a great tool that can help you figure out the job that most aligns with your motivators. Take the 15-minute assessment (which is free to Elavare Moms).
Once you've completed it, email us your results at [email protected], and we'll send you a customized job role document which will tell you which roles are ideal for what motivates you.
You can take it here (use "Mom" as your job title and "Elavare" as your company).
One Last Thing
If you don’t know what career you want yet, it doesn’t mean you’re behind, it means you’re being thoughtful. You’re taking the time to figure out what’s next, instead of rushing into something that doesn’t fit.
Give yourself room to explore. There’s no rush. You’ve already done hard things. You can do this, too--step by step.
