When most people think of networking, they picture a formal event with name tags, handshakes, and small talk. But the truth is, your most valuable network is already around you.

- It’s your old coworker who still remembers your work ethic.
- It’s your college roommate who stayed in the industry you’re now exploring.
- It’s the mom you sit next to at the soccer game who works in HR.
- It might even be your hairstylist, who knows more people in your city than you do.

The people in your life already know you, care about you, and often want to help. You just need to bring them into your career journey.

Here’s how to start tapping into those connections:

1. Start sharing where you’re headed.
Instead of keeping career goals to yourself, talk about them. You don’t have to ask directly for help, just saying “I’m exploring project management roles” plants a seed.

2. Be specific, not vague.
“I’m looking for a job” is too broad. Try: “I’d love to connect with people in marketing or digital strategy.” The clearer you are, the easier it is for others to help.

3. Think beyond titles and hierarchies.
Networking isn’t about chasing executives. Peers and even those earlier in their careers often share the most practical tips, connections, and encouragement.

4. Give as much as you get.
Send people job postings they might like. Share a helpful podcast episode. Celebrate their wins. Strong networks are built on mutual investment.

5. Stay connected in between “asks.”
Don’t only reach out when you need something. A quick message saying, “I thought of you when I saw this article,” keeps the relationship alive.

Networking isn’t about luck--it’s about consistency and care. And when you begin with the people who already know you, you’ll be amazed at the doors that open.
