How to Talk About Your Career Gap Without Apologizing for It
May 13, 2025
Let’s get this out of the way: taking time away from work to raise a family isn’t a “gap.” It’s an experience. A chapter. A whole season of growth, learning, and strength.
Still, we know how intimidating it can feel to explain that time in a job interview or put it on a resume. So let’s walk through it together—no shame, no stress, just real talk and helpful tools.
Step 1: Reframe Your Mindset
Before you write a word on your resume or walk into an interview, take a moment to reframe how you see your time away from work.
You weren’t “out of the game”—you were running a household, navigating curveballs, solving problems in real time, and showing up every single day for the people who needed you most.
You didn’t step away. You stepped into some of the most meaningful, growth-filled years of your life.
Step 2: What to Say in An Interview
Instead of trying to hide the gap, own it. Here’s how:
If the question comes up (and it probably will), here’s a confident and honest way to approach it: Keep it short, proud, and future-focused.
Example:
“I took time away from the workforce to raise my children and manage our family’s needs. During that time, I stayed active by volunteering, leading community projects, and taking courses to stay sharp. Now, I’m excited to re-enter the workforce with a fresh perspective and renewed energy. I’ve gained skills that are highly relevant to this role—especially in communication, organization, and managing high-pressure situations.”
You don’t need to overexplain.
You don’t need to apologize.
Just be honest, be confident, and bring it back to what you offer now.
Step 3: Practice Saying It Out Loud
Say your story to yourself in the mirror.
Say it to a friend.
The more you hear your own strength, the more natural it becomes to speak it.
You’re not behind. You’re not starting over.
You’re bringing everything you’ve lived, learned, and led into this next chapter.
And that’s a story worth telling—with confidence.
