How to Stay Motivated in Your Job Search During the Holidays

Nov 18, 2025

The holidays have a way of slowing everything down--errands, routines, even our motivation.  Between school programs, family gatherings, and the emotional busyness of the season, it’s easy to think: “I’ll pick up the job search again in January.”

But here’s what most people don’t realize: The holidays are one of the best times of the year to build momentum. Companies are finalizing their budgets for 2026. Leaders are reviewing team needs. New projects are being approved. And yes, that includes new roles that will open in Q1.

This is your window to stay visible, stay ready, and stay connected. Here are a few ways to keep your motivation high and your job search moving--without overwhelming your already full life.

1. Set Small, Realistic Weekly Goals - During the holidays, big goals can feel like a lot. Instead, choose three mini goals each week--things that actually move the needle:

  • Update one section of your resume
  • Reach out to two people in your network
  • Apply to one job
  • Spend 20 minutes learning a new skill
  • Attend one community or networking event

Small goals create momentum. Momentum builds confidence. Confidence carries you into January already ahead.

2. Shift from “Job Seeking” to “Relationship Building” - December is one of the easiest months to re-connect with people professionally. Everyone is already reaching out to their networks--sending end-of-year messages, sharing updates, and reflecting on the past year.  This is your chance to reach out in a natural way.

Send messages like: “I hope your holidays are off to a wonderful start! I’m exploring new opportunities for 2026 and would love to reconnect in the new year. Would you be open to a quick call?” Soft outreach builds bridges. And bridges lead to job leads.

3. Get on the Radar Before Roles Are Posted -  When budgets are approved, hiring managers already have a list of people they want to talk to. Be on that list. Use the holidays to:

  • Introduce yourself to decision makers
  • Reconnect with former colleagues
  • Comment meaningfully on LinkedIn
  • Follow companies you admire
  • Send congratulatory messages or end-of-year notes

You’re not asking for a job--you’re reminding them you exist.

4. Reflect Before You Reset - Before 2026 begins, take an hour to reflect on what went well this year and what you want next. Ask yourself:

  • What kind of work do I want to do?
  • What environment do I do well in?
  • How do I want my life to feel next year?
  • What skills do I want to grow?

Clarity ignites motivation. When you know what you want, it’s easier to chase it.

5. Protect Your Energy (This Part Matters) - The job search can be emotional--especially during a season full of expectations. Give yourself permission to rest, take breaks, and protect your peace.  You’re building. And building takes energy. Set boundaries with yourself:

  • No checking job boards after 7 pm
  • One “off day” each week
  • A daily walk or moment of stillness

Your well-being isn’t a luxury. It’s the fuel that keeps you moving.

6. Remember: January Belongs to the Prepared - While many people pause their job search in December, you’re doing something different: You’re preparing. You’re staying connected. You’re planting seeds. You’re keeping your confidence alive.  When the hiring rush hits in early 2026, you won’t be scrambling, you’ll already be in motion.

If you’re returning to the workforce, pivoting careers, or rebuilding after a major life shift, the holidays can feel like a lonely time to job search. This season isn’t a setback, it’s a springboard. Use it to grow connections, refine your story, and step confidently into the opportunities waiting for you in the new year.  And we’re cheering you on every step of the way.
